Molars and premolars often have small deep grooves, called fissures, that easily trap food debris and plaque. Even with thorough brushing, these areas are not always easy to clean. Applying sealants to these pits and fissures involves placing a protective resin on the surface to prevent the buildup of bacteria and significantly reduce the risk of cavities.
The procedure begins with cleaning the tooth to be protected. The surface is then prepared with a special gel to help the resin adhere properly. The sealant is applied into the pits and fissures, then hardened using a special light. The entire process takes only a few minutes per tooth, is completely painless, and does not require anesthesia.
Sealants are particularly recommended for children when their permanent molars appear, usually between the ages of 6 and 12. They can also be beneficial for teenagers and adults who are at higher risk of cavities.
