Screening for oral lesions is a simple but essential exam to detect early signs of oral cancer and other conditions. Symptoms to watch for include sores that do not heal, red or white patches, swelling, or persistent pain in the mouth.
At Soins dentaires Stephan, we systematically include this screening in routine visits to act quickly if any abnormality is detected. Early detection significantly increases the chances of effective treatment and reduces the risk of serious complications.
The exam consists of a thorough visual inspection of the mouth, tongue, inside of the cheeks, palate, and gums. We also palpate the lymph nodes in the neck and surrounding soft tissues to detect any abnormalities not visible to the naked eye.
If a suspicious area is observed, we may recommend follow-up or additional tests with a specialist.
Oral lesion screening is recommended at least once or twice a year, and more frequently for individuals at higher risk, particularly smokers and regular alcohol consumers.
